Wellington’s Eastern Suburbs residents generously donated food and household supplies to the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Foodbank Appeal on Saturday 17 May.
Sponsored and advertised six-monthly by Newstalk ZB, the collection was held at the Pak ‘n Save supermarket, Kilbirnie.
The Society’s Foodbank provides emergency food and supplies to people in most need in the Wellington are. They are assisted by local St Vincent de Paul Conferences and the Society’s community welfare Centre in Newtown.
Around 50 large boxes were filled and cash donations made to support welfare services to the poor, sick and lonely in the area, regardless of religion, culture or situation.
Shoppers at Pak ‘n Save were invited to purchase an extra one or two non-perishable items during their visit and to place the items in the collection boxes as they left the supermarket.
‘This generous response by shoppers shows their compassion in reaching out in a practical way to their neighbours in most need,’ said Brendan Quirk, President, Seatoun/Miramar Conference.
The next six-monthly Foodbank Appeal will be held in November 2014 at Pak ‘n Save Kilbirnie, Wellington and will again be well advertised by Newstalk ZB.
