Peace Together is the theme of a celebration of peace which uses the image of people as pieces in a jigsaw in the Hutt later this month.
Initiated by the Inter-Faith Council in the Hutt Valley, the ecumenical initiative recognises the United Nations International Day of Peace.
The council comprises members of the Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Moslem and Sikh faith-traditions and meets regularly to deepen appreciation of each other’s cultures and beliefs.
While the evening will bring together the various world religions, it is open to the general public.
‘Peace is on everyone’s mind,’ said one of the organisers, Fr James Lyons of Ss Peter & Paul Parish. ‘The theme, Peace Together, acknowledges that making peace is a shared responsibility. No one can make peace alone.’
Another council member said it was a wonderful opportunity to come together and show a collective desire for peace.
‘We feel so helpless as we watch news reports of violence and bloodshed all over the world.’
Peace Together will use the image of a jigsaw. Each person has a part to play in the creation of peace. Each person is a necessary piece with a place in the pattern if peace is to happen.
A variety of cultural presentations will demonstrate that the yearning for peace crosses racial and religious boundaries.
This is an open invitation to come and help piece together the fabric of peace.
• Join others wanting to give peace a chance in our troubled world.
• Remove the barriers of prejudice and fear that keep us apart.
• Give thanks for the gift of life.
