St Benedict’s School community officially opened and blessed their newly-turfed top field on the first day of Term 4. There’s something special about St Benedict’s School – from the plethora of parents in attendance, to the support of staff for their students – and it was in evidence for all to see.

Speeches from Erica Willoughby, Help our Kids Co-Chair; Anna McDougall, BoT Representative; and Jenny Gordon, Vicar for Education, Archdiocese of Wellington; followed by a blessing from Fr Pete Roe sm – took place to declare the newly-turfed field open, to the delight of the students, staff and community.

To raise the funds required, many fundraisers have taken place at the school including sausage sizzles, movie nights, Fathers’ Day breakfasts, mufti days, school fairs and quizzes. The students of St Benedict’s are delighted with their brand new playing area.

Principal Michael Hinds said, ‘This has been a long time in the making and our school community are deserved of this. It’s been a whole-school community effort. Lunchtime has just passed on the first day and the number of games played, cartwheels performed, as well as tries and goals scored on the new turf are real examples of our students embracing and enjoying their new all-weather playing area.’
