Sacred Heart Cathedral has a new organist, at last. The cathedral has been without an organist since Thomas Wilson left two years ago. Michael Stewart (above) has an extensive curriculum vitae for his 28 years. He already has one CD to his credit and another on the way. He was born in Wellington and gained a BMus with first-class honours from Canterbury University where he also held the first John Robert Godley Scholarship to Christ Church Cathedral. A Dame Malvina Major Arts Excellence Award in 2002 enabled him to study in Canada where he won a McGill Organ Scholarship. He graduated Master of Music in 2004 majoring in organ performance. Michael then took part in organ competitions in Ireland and Germany.
His second recording, Ave Maris Stella, is due for release later this year.
Michael will be the organist at a choir concert in the cathedral on Wednesday, 24 May, the feast day of Our Lady Help of Christians
