Fundraising at home and abroad

Schools

October 2013

Students at St Claudine Thevenet School in Wainuiomata have been seeing a need and working for fairer sharing of resources at home and overseas this year.
Caritas Social Justice Educator Patricia Lynch attended the school’s latest fundraiser on 30 August, where the student council organised a 50-cent day to raise money to buy iPads for more classrooms.

Students in some senior classrooms have had access to iPads for their study, but the council thought it would be great for more classrooms in the school to have iPads, too.

The students planned and ran the day. There were food stalls, crafts made by each class, games, raffles, bric-a-brac and more.

Earlier in the year, St Claudine Thevenet’s A2 class ran a Lenten fundraiser to support a Caritas partnership programme on Kapo Island, Papua New Guinea. The funds raised helped families there buy cocoa seedlings which they grow to earn an income to send their children to school.

The students also made beautiful cards for the children on Kapo Island. Patricia said in doing so, the children of St Claudine Thevenet, along with many other schools, show how they honour their Catholic tradition to help the poor and vulnerable.
