WelCom June/July 2021
Inspired after a presentation from Theresa from Caritas, St Canice School, Westport, Year 8 student leaders and school council members, Sophie Rea and Tess Carlson, hosted a school Caritas learning, activity and fundraising day in March.
The day involved planning events and activities for kura (140 students). Sophie and Tess researched several countries to be studied, created timetables, groupings, points systems for School House team building, background information for teachers, video links, reflection questions, notices to parents, and a digital yard sale. Their kaupapa was to raise awareness for the work Caritas does around the world, to highlight struggles of people in hardship, and what we can do to help.
The Caritas House event included multiple activities and learning opportunities that taught students about growing issues in countries such as Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, South Sudan, Cambodia, Syria and Philippines.
The day unfolded well and all students from Year 1 through to Year 8 enjoyed themselves. They discussed how they could help people in need not just now but in the future.
The day was a huge success. It opened the eyes, and hearts of many students at St Canice’s School.
St Canice’s also hosted a St Patrick’s Day fun day organised by the teachers, which included an online garage sale to sell some desks and other items no longer used. Funds raised for Caritas totalled $384.40.
