Befriending the Old Testament: A Postscript

After concluding her eight-part series in last month’s WelCom about the Old Testament, Dr Elizabeth Julian rsm offers a ‘postscript’ with online links to explore the Old Testament further.

The websites below should help you explore the Old Testament further.

The Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) has a very comprehensive website:

Felix Just’s comprehensive website is found here: catholic-resources.org

Just is an excellent Jesuit biblical scholar and has helpful charts and more on any biblical topic you can think of. All Church documents concerning Scripture are found here.

The Bible Project has short, animated videos that deal with almost all the books of the Bible: www.youtube.com/user/jointhebibleproject/videos

The University of Nottingham has short videos at about seven minutes each on all books of the Bible: www.bibledex.com

The universalis app is excellent. It may be downloaded here: universalis.com/ with a free trial for two months (lite version) then you can pay $40 and have it on your various devices. It has the Mass Readings, Order of the Mass, Liturgy of the Hours, Calendar. There is also an excellent short commentary on the Mass Readings every day by Henry Wansbrough op, an excellent British biblical scholar. Go to settings (Android) or translations (Windows). 

The United States Catholic Bishops Conference has short introductions to each category of biblical books and each individual book: www.usccb.org/bible

Finally, sit back and listen to eight choirs of five voices each, sing ‘Spem in alium’ a wonderful choral work in 40 parts composed by Thomas Tallis in c. 1570. The text is based on a passage from the Book of Judith Chapter 9 about placing our hope in God alone. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmH1nZSGIyY
