Sacred Heart Cathedral restoration and strengthening work update

Team Architects recently shared photo updates on the restoration and strengthening work happening on the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Hill Street which shows the progress made so far.

The Cathedral has been closed since July 2018 when it was identified as earthquake prone. In August 2020, work to strengthen and restore the Cathedral began. Alongside the strengthening work the long delayed restoration of the exterior stone and brickwork was able to commence.  This is being followed by the refurbishment required to the interior of the Cathedral.  The Cathedral is preparing to reopen in June 2024.

We are still fundraising to raise the final $1 million towards the costs of this work. If you can donate or help with fundraising, please click here to visit the Cathedral Campaign website.
