Hīkoi mō te Tiriti

20 November 2024

On Tuesday 19 November, members of the Catholic community in the Archdiocese attended the Hīkoi mō te Tiriti. Monsignor Gerard Burns led a short prayer time before the hikoi at the portrait of Mary Mother of God, St Mary’s of the Angels to pray for the good of Aotearoa New Zealand. The artwork includes an image of Te Tii marae, a reference to Bishop Pompallier’s presence at Waitangi in 1840. The prayer group then went to Waitangi Park to join the hīkoi.

The Archdiocesan Ecology, Justice and Peace Commission also released a list of resources for education around Te Tiriti. There’s a broad range of perspectives and knowledgeable commentary including Catholic academic writers. The list can be viewed below.

Helpful videos and articles

In light of current discussion around Te Tiriti o Waitangi the following resources might be useful. The list was very largely prepared by Sr Elizabeth Julian rsm and members of the Ecology, Justice and Peace Commission.  Some of these items are written pieces and others are videos.  We’ve arranged them roughly by topic and we hope that there’s some useful and interesting material.  Naturally, a range of views is presented.
