The Wellington Catholic Homes Trust built its first 20-unit Bishop Snedden Retirement Village in Waikanae in the early 1980s. Now 38 years later, the Trust has added 20 new units.
Opening and blessing the extension on 18 May, Cardinal John congratulated the Trust and the Trustees on how they look after the aged in the community in a Christian and caring way. ‘With these 20 new units, and in a time when house prices have rocketed and affordable housing is becoming harder and harder, the Trustees have done a wonderful job in providing for the extension to this Bishop Snedden Village.
‘These one- or two-bedroom units – in this quiet, flat accessible area, handy to Waikanae shopping centre – are moderately priced, well-constructed and maintained. It is also wonderful to know residents of any faith can purchase their own home and live here as part of this community.
‘As someone said about this village: “It is a lovely caring and sharing community. We build the buildings, but the people who live here give it its heart and love.” Thank you to all the residents for your hearts and love which make this place what it is.’
Cardinal John spoke about Pope Francis’ universal message to remember those who are often alone and not able to get about because of infirmities, and the challenges of growing old.
The Trustees and residents have embraced age and each other at the Bishop Snedden Retirement Village to develop a sharing and caring community in a comfortable, safe and eco-friendly environment.
The Wellington Catholic Homes Trust was established in 1976 under the Charitable Trust Act 1957. Trustees are representatives of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, the Catholic Women’s League, Catholic medical practitioners, the nursing profession, and Catholic lawyers. There is also a nominee of the Archbishop of Wellington and business and finance representatives. The Trust provides accommodation, care and services for elderly people expressive of Christian principles.
