St John’s College Hastings has for the first time won the O’Shea Shield.
The college won the highly competitive prize with its sister college, Sacred Heart in Napier on the weekend of May 5 and 6.
The Shield was hosted for the first time by Cullinane College in Whanganui.
The contest is hard fought among the 17 colleges in the Palmerston North and Wellington dioceses.
Started 67 years ago in the Wellington Archdiocese to honour its first archbishop, Thomas O’Shea, the contest comprises seven events – debating, religious questions, scripture reading, religious drama, oratory, junior prepared speech and impromptu speech.
Last year’s winners, St Patrick’s College Kilbirnie, were runners up this year, having won the cup for debating being the only team to score a perfect six out of six.
Sacred Heart Napier won the Drama Cup and the Religious Questions Cup.
