Young people from around the world celebrated The Society of St Vincent de Paul International Youth Day on 4 July. The theme was ‘Young Vincentians Caring for the Environment! Caring today to generate sustainability and ensure tomorrow’.
SVdP’s Nelson Area Council held a competition for all Vinnies groups within the area to design and draw a cake showing what it means to be a young person in SVdP. Finn Campbell of St Peter Chanel School, Motueka, created the winning drawing. His design represented ‘new growth’ and the important role young people play in SVdP throughout the world.

Finn’s cake design representing ‘new growth’ saw him win the cake competition.
For his prize Finn was presented with a real cake matching his design, which he nominated to share with his class who are all involved in the Vinnies programme. ‘I wanted to share the cake with my class because they care about each other and their work,’ said Finn. He was also presented with a $20 voucher to spend at the SVdP Centre in Richmond.

Young Vinnies at Garin College and St Paul’s School lived out the message of the 2019 International Youth Day theme by creating over 30 bags from upcycled material and repurposed t-shirts. They donated the bags to Richmond’s SVdP Centre for customers to use.
