The 2018 Māori Pastoral Care Appeal for the Archdiocese of Wellington takes place on Sunday, 26 August and at Vigil Masses on Saturday, 25 August.
The kaupapa (theme) of the Appeal is whānau. This includes ngā pakeke (elders); ngā rangatahi (youth); ngā tamariki/ngā pēpi (children/babies). It means the Church whānau (parishes, schools and communities).
Many Māori Catholics in our parishes and the Māori Pastoral Care team share their time, talent and skills with Archdiocesan communities through karanga, karakia, pōwhiri, assistance with formation days and annual events such as the Treaty of Waitangi Mass. These activities help to further grow the bi-cultural relationship within the Archdiocese of Wellington.
As Pope Francis Pāpā Werahiko says:
“We are called to live not as one without others, above or against others, but with and for others.”
Pope Francis highlights the connectedness between all peoples; equality; and a call to community and service and this is transformed into action through your kind donations and prayers for 2018 Appeal.
Monsignor Gerard Burns (Parish Priest, Te Ngākau Tapu Personal Parish, Porirua), Rangimoeroa Waikari-Panapa (Kaiawhina Māori) and Deacon Danny Karatea-Goddard (Vicar for Māori-Turanga Māori) are the current members of the Māori Pastoral Care Team. The team is based at the Catholic Centre, Hill St, Thorndon.
